"Mountaineers Prove to Georgia and the BCS That They Are One of the Best" Atlanta, GA. January 3, 2006. What might have been the biggest upset in BCS history also may have proved to be the biggest win in West Virginia football history. Feeling like a team that had gotten no respect, the Mountaineers jumped all over the SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs and held on at the end to capture the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl Championship. But the Mountaineers would not quit, and despite Georgia cutting the lead to three, held on with one of the most daring calls in bowl history. Hanging on to a three point lead with 1:38 left and facing fourth and six on the Georgia 48 yard-line, West Virginia Head Coach Rich Rodriguez called for a fake punt that punter Phil Brady carried for 10-yards and a first down, enabling the Mountaineers to run out the clock and win its first January bowl game since 1948.
